Panel III – Europes Digital Souvereignity – AI in Defense

Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, a fundemental political and social discussion has been raised about the future of Bundeswehr and NATO and their military equipment. The change is so profound and has been coined by the term “Zeitenwende” (turn of times). A re-evaluation of the use also of technologies such as AI is currently taking place and is also currently becoming socially acceptable. For cyber defense or data analytics business models, the decision should still be fairly straightforward. But should AI also be able to be used for attacks? The Bundeswehr has a unique opportunity to modernize itself noticeably, but we must ask how far we want to go. And what does this mean for Europe’s sovereignty? How can we reconcile our value-based policy with the international technological race?
